Superhero Birthday Party

This is an exciting month if you are a fan of Superhero movies.  Our family loved Thor Ragnarok and we will definitely be checking out Justice League.  A few years ago, we had a Superhero themed birthday party for Milo.  Being a fan of comics never seems to get old so I thought it would be fun to post about our celebration.

Gabe has been a lifelong fan of Comic Books.  They were the thing that got him reading at an early age and inspired him to become an artist.  He doesn't have as much time as he would like to sketch, these days.  When we moved into our new house 8 years ago, he started the tradition of making Happy Birthday posters for the kids.  He always makes something that reflects what each child is into, that year.  He has come up with fun tributes featuring Minecraft, Angry Birds, Lego, Eminem and Fall Out Boy.  (Milo's bedroom walls are now plastered in all of Gabe's creations!)  The poster above fit perfectly into our Superhero themed party.

We created a photo spot in the backyard with a mini Metropolis.  I went to the box store to get the larger boxes and then to Lakeshore (school supply store) to get blue bulletin board paper to wrap them like big packages. The kids helped me create "windows" with Post-Its.  We used a black sheet as a backdrop.  As a final touch we made clouds out of felt and pinned them to the drop from behind.  Our guests liked this area so much that they spent a lot of time hanging out here, pretending to be soaring through the sky.

For some reason, I have an inability to serve only one dessert at our parties.  And I like to bake so I will often make a cake for the birthday girl/boy and cupcakes for the guests.  Cupcakes are a classic because they are easy to hand out and folks don't have to wait for me to slice the cake.

This insanely cool set of cupcake liners and Avengers picks was originally purchased at Williams-Sonoma.  As it was a few years ago I am pretty sure they are no longer available.  But the picks would be fairly easy to make if you have a printer, some cardstock, toothpicks, scissors and tape.

The Cake

The Cake

This was a very basic two layer cake with a fondant overlay.  Fondant is really easy to work with but most brands are horrible tasting.  I try to always use the Duff fondant from Michael's.  It is actually pretty good.  I purchased some Superhero printables off of Etsy and then made the cake toppers using colorful straws as my picks.  There are a lot of vendors that sell printable options and they are really easy to purchase and print at home.

For the most part I am very anti-food coloring.  But I decided to chill out a little and jazz up a boring vanilla cake recipe.  When I was a kid, my Grandparents took my cousin and I on a trip across the USA in an RV.  It was truly one of the greatest experiences of my lifetime.  We stopped at an ice cream shop in Minnesota that had a Superman flavored ice cream that was delicious.  This memory inspired the cake.

We had a lot of food, besides all the dessert.  I generally try to serve something other than pizza at our parties.  There is nothing wrong with pizza and if you want to serve it at your party, go for it!  As a parent with 2 kids, I feel like we have A LOT of pizza in our lives so I try and mix it up when I can.  This party was held in between lunch and dinner so we offered a variety of snacks like hot dogs, popcorn and fruit kabobs.

For decor, I covered a few boxes like I did with the ones outside to create "buildings" as the centerpiece of our food table.  I covered the mirror in a "skyline" made of construction paper.  The popcorn cups were made by rolling copies of comic book pages into cones.

My favorite project for this party was the pennant garlands that I made using recycled comic books.  This was an idea that I found on Pinterest.  Sewing is a skill that I have yet to really conquer.  But I do own a sewing machine, even though I still need my Mom to help me thread it.  This was a fairly simple project, considering.  I created a triangle template out of cardboard and then traced/cut out the shapes by hand.  I used twill binding tape in red and blue to connect the stream of triangles using my sewing machine.  It was a straight stitch.  The thing that took the longest was cutting everything out.  We still have 12 of these banners and I just used them again for MIlo's most recent birthday.  They have held up nicely.

For the favors, I purchased capes online and attached a simple mask to the front of each bundle.  Even the kids who chose to wear costumes to the party were happy to have another thing to use for dress up.

We were very pleased with how everything turned out and it was a really fun and memorable event.  I hope that this inspires you to have your own Super party!
