Tiki Day at the Park
The 6th Annual Tiki Day at the Park was held at Disneyland on October 1, 2017. This was our first time attending the unofficial theme day and we were impressed by the turn out. It was sort of an informal, Polynesian version of Dapper Day. People really invested time making one of a kind outfits.
I must admit, I have been very focused on planning our fall Dapper Day outfits and did not invest as much time as I would have liked in putting together our "looks". We threw everything together in a couple of days. Ella's dress was the same one that she wore for Old Hollywood Day (Shhhhhh! Don't tell Paris Hilton!) But it had pineapples all over it so it was perfect. My outfit was much less extraordinary but it fit the theme. After looking more places than I would have expected, I ended up finding this cute shift dress at Tommy Bahama's. I made ears and palm frond corsages for each of us to wear. We reused some parasols that we already had.
Ella's ears were inspired by some that I had seen on Pinterest. The bird rings/ "ears" are actually vintage bracelets that I got at a local antique shop, for $2 each. It was a bit of a lesson in engineering and I now have even more respect for all of the amazing vendors on Etsy who craft Disney ears. Once I figured out how to make them stable, it was all about adornment.
My ears were simpler. I bought an inexpensive, plain pair of Mickey ears off of Amazon. I then wrapped navy blue ribbon to match my dress around the perimeter of the ears. After that, I layered faux greenery and flowers onto the ears with my beloved glue gun. The ears that I bought from Amazon were 12/$16. They were super flimsy on their own but as I layered things onto them, they gradually became stiffer and stronger.
Overall, we were really happy with how the ears turned out and are going to take them with us for our trip to Walt Disney World in December. At the rate we are going, we are going to need a suitcase just for our ears.
There was a schedule of events for everyone to meet up. It was so fun to be a part of such a massive herd of pineapple and hibiscus loving, Disneyland fans. The first event was a group photo in front of the castle at 1:15 pm. After that, everyone headed toward The Jungle Cruise. The entire line was filled with our group. Then at 3 pm, everyone met on the Mark Twain and proceeded to Pirate's. There was another photo at 4:45 pm in front of the castle. Sadly, we missed that as it was a school night and we didn't want to get stuck for hours getting back to LA. But I saw lots of pictured for the Tiki Room meet up and both Ella and I were sad that we could not attend the final event at Trader Sam's. Next time!
We loved seeing all of the outfits that people wore. There were a lot of big groups dressed up and it was an all ages affair. The whole park was alive with a jovial tiki-vibe. This is one of the things that I love about Disneyland. Everyone talks about what a magical place it is. But personally, I am moved by the Disney fans and their dedication to celebrating life with passion. If you are considering going to this event next year, we HIGHLY recommend it. And it doesn't matter if you are simply wearing a Hawaiian shirt or decked out in fabulous, vintage attire. Everyone is welcome to the party. Be sure to follow the Tiki Day in the Park page on Facebook for future events or to see what other people wore.
